Speaker Paul Ryan: 'We Need the Facts' on James Comey's Firing

This was echoed by AshLee Strong, spokeswoman for House Speaker Paul Ryan: "We need to have all the facts, and it is appropriate for the House Oversight Committee to request this memo". And the longer you delay, the longer it's going to last. The only difference today is that Donald Trump didn't farm out his obstruction job to anybody.

Trump left the White House Wednesday morning to head to CT where he was scheduled to give the commencement address at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

"We're not going to try and play to the crowd, or meet a timeline", he said.

This reversal in Trump's initial "economic boom" - widely known as "Trumponomics" - can be seen in the currency markets also, with the euro climbing to its highest level against the dollar since November 7 - just before the United States presidential election. But given the bombshell news events since Ryan last went before the Washington press corps almost two weeks ago, the questions did not focus on the major legislative effort he's trying to pursue. The White House has denied Monday's report.

Trump's been roundly criticized for this shocker, not only by usual folks, like Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, but also by Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker.

Comparisons to Nixon are never a good sign for a president. Even as Trump has admitted to astonishing chunks of the stories -- that Russia was on his mind when he fired Comey, and that he did share intelligence information with his Russian guests -- the president's aides maintain that he did nothing inappropriate in his handling of Flynn, Comey or intelligence secrets. Comey reportedly produced a series of memos detailing his various interactions with Trump. According to Trump, he did so specifically because of his dissatisfaction with Comey's investigation into the Russian Federation scandal.

Last week, the man I call Trump the Pretender unceremoniously and gutlessly fired FBI Director James Comey, a man for whom I shed no tears and have many times excoriated on HuffPost.

Take the Comey memo. He faced similar questions on Friday when he appeared at an event in Wisconsin, just hours after Trump put out a string of headline-making tweets. I have said on previous occasions, and do now say again, the President should be impeached. "Those are the things that are within our purview in Congress". In a single day, the average position among Washington republicans went from "gee, a special prosecutor seems like overkill" to "I'm not sure we're ready to talk impeachment". "That's what's in my control, and that's what I'm focused on". The White House pointed to congressional testimony by McCabe last week in which he said there has been no effort to impede the FBI's probe.

Asked if he had confidence in the president as he left the press conference, the House Speaker said "I do". Mike Rounds told reporters with a tinge of frustration, as he rushed into an elevator. "But I think we're in impeachment territory now for the first time".

"The White House is obstructing our investigation, covering up for General Flynn, and refusing to provide a single document", he said, reading from a prepared statement. Richard Shelby described it as perennial problem.
