Swedish fixture postponed over match-fixing allegation

Swedish fixture postponed over match-fixing allegation

The SvFF stated an unnamed AIK player had been offered a "substantial sum" of money as well as being threatened on Tuesday in order to underperform in the match. It is a very serious attack against Swedish football.

A SvFF statement said: "The attempt to rig the Allsvenska match between IFK Gothenburg and AIK took place on Tuesday".

Swedish football authorities postponed Thursday's top-flight game between IFK Gothenburg and AIK following a match-fixing attempt that included "veiled threats".

"We will never, ever accept this", Hakan Sjostrand, the secretary general of the SvFF said.

Swedish Officials and media at a Swedish Football Federation press conference in Stockholm Thursday, May 18, 2017.

'The AIK player was called to a meeting where he was offered a significant amount of money if he actively worked to make sure the team lost the match, ' the Swedish FA said.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

The match in Sweden's Allsvenskan league was set to take place at Gothenburg's Gamla Ullevi stadium, but all the relevant parties have agreed to the postponement as police start an investigation.

Sjostrand added: "It is ultimately not about a single match, therefore it is important we act forcefully".

"All of our matches should be secure and decided on sporting grounds". Exciting because no one knows how the match will finish, who will win.

"It's a reality that players are contacted", he said.

AIK sporting manager Bjorn Wesstrom is confident the club can cope with the extra attention they will now receive.

"There are going to be many insinuations, a lot of looking over shoulders".

The two teams, along with the Swedish association, are expected to agree on a new date for the match.

AIK are now sixth in the Swedish top flight, five places above Gothenburg who they have already played eight times this term.
