Thousands attend funeral of youth martyred by Indian troops

Thousands attend funeral of youth martyred by Indian troops

"Civilians had also assembled there and that is when three militants came in a auto and started to fire indiscriminately", Vaid said, adding that the policemen retaliated the fire.

According to police, militants on Saturday evening attacked a police party at Mir Bazar in Kulgam district, about 55 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

A group of Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists allegedly fired their guns in the air on Sunday as a salute to their slain associate Fayaz Ahmad, who was killed during an exchange of bullets a day earlier, an Indian Express report said.

More details are awaited.

The militant, Fayaz was allegedly involved in the Udhampur highway attack on a Border Security Force convoy in August 2015. "One policeman and two civilians lost their lives in the attack", SP Vaid, police chief of Jammu and Kashmir, told the media.

They said one of the fighters was also killed while attacking policemen clearing the site of a road accident late on Saturday near Kulgam district.

Sources said hundreds of people joined the funeral procession of the slain terrorist amid chanting of pro-freedom and anti-India slogans. The militant was killed in retaliatory action, police said.

Anti-India sentiment runs deep in the predominantly Muslim Kashmir valley, one of the world's most heavily militarised areas, where most people favour independence or a merger with Pakistan.

It was one of the deadliest attack targeting police and bank guards.

A police official said security agencies are mulling conducting frequent crackdowns and search operations in south Kashmir to dislodge the militants from their basis.

The statement said the Indians also targeted civilians in the village of Thruti with mortars and that Pakistani troops returned fire.
