American soldiers wounded, not killed in incident at Afghan base

Four foreign soldiers were injured when the Afghan soldier opened fire on foreign troops in Mazar-i Sharif, an Afghan military spokesman told CNN.

"At this time, we can confirm there are no USA or NATO Resolute Support fatalities", the mission said in a statement.

Last week, a Taliban infiltrator in the Afghan army shot two USA soldiers dead before being killed.

The latest attack comes just a week after an Afghan commando killed three American troops and wounded another in eastern Nangarhar province, in an insider attack that was claimed by the Taliban. There were no USA fatalities.

These insider assaults, known as green-on-blue attacks, have increased in frequency as the Taliban regains a foothold in Afghanistan.

The attack on Saturday took place at the Afghan National Army's 209th Corps headquarters in the province of Balkh, located some 540 km to the northwest of Kabul. The incident was under investigation.

A massive attack in April on the same Shaheen base by Taliban militants left scores of Afghan soldiers dead. "More information will be provided as it becomes available".

It comes as Washington is expected to announce an increase in the United States military deployment in the country to bolster Afghan forces who are struggling to contain the Taliban's nationwide offensive.

The attackers, some dressed in Afghan military uniforms, managed to pass through two checkpoints in military vehicles before being stopped, after which they opened fire on the busy compound.

So far this year, six USA service members have been killed in combat in Afghanistan, all in Nangarhar in the eastern part of the country, according to statistics compiled by the website icasualties.org.

In a statement Wednesday, Mattis said that "this administration will not repeat the mistakes of the past".
