BAD BRET - Tropical storm named

An area of disturbed weather in the Western Caribbean continues to organize this evening.

Because of that, the National Hurricane Center in Miami initiated Tropical Storm Warnings in advance of the system, even though it's not formally named. The European forecast model is much further west with the potential system near the southern Texas and Northern Mexico coast. The National Hurricane Center is now forecasting a 40 percent chance of this low-pressure system becoming a tropical cyclone over the next two days and a 60 percent chance over the next five days.

Right now, the National Hurricane Center gives it an 80 percent chance of developing into a tropical depression or storm over the next five days.

Today is the day that forecasters should get a better handle on what a tropical system nearing the Gulf is going to do.

We are now watching the southern Gulf of Mexico for the potential of tropical development over the next few days.

It is still too early to predict a potential track for where the disturbance could form. As of now, the models are trying to forecast something that doesn't exist.

While not a closed low at the moment, this system is already producing winds of tropical storm force along with very heavy rain on the eastern side.

The disturbance is forecast to keep heading west or west-northwest at 15 to 20 miles per hour over the tropical Atlantic region over the next few days, according to weather authorities.

Bottom line with 93-L, South Mississippi should prepare now for the potential for flooding from heavy tropical rains this week.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for the Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the NHC said. "But some of the newer ones have a wider spread, and it looks like most of the U.S. Gulf Coast should be keeping an eye on this now". It is now producing 40 miles per hour sustained winds as it moves west at 23 miles per hour.
