Bill Cosby sexual assault case ends in mistrial

Cosby is accused of drugging and assaulting Constand, who was the director of operations for Temple University's women's basketball team in January 2004, when she says the incident happened at Cosby's home near Philadelphia.

"Our plan is to move this case forward as soon as possible", he said, just after the jury found itself hung following five days of deliberations. "It has been restored", said Andrew Wyatt, his spokesman.

Bill Cosby exits the Montgomery County Courthouse after a mistrial in his sexual assault case in Norristown, Pa., Saturday, June 17, 2017. And a federal judge dismissed a ninth accuser's case, finding her complaint inadequate.

How do I describe the judge?

Cosby himself didn't comment.

Celebrities are reacting to the news of Bill Cosby's sexual assault mistrial.

Cosby had previously admitted to having an affair, McMonagle said, but that was not what he had been on trial for.

"Imagine it's you being asked to defend age-old accusations - how do you defend that?" he said.

The decision, Steele told the court, "lies in the fact that she's entitled to a verdict in this case".

She testified that Cosby acted as a mentor before offering her unidentified pills one night that left her unable to stop his advances.

Cosby's trial ended without a verdict after jurors failed to reach a unanim.

Instead she put across a venomous attack on Steele's credibility, as well as that of Judge Steven O'Neill and the media. "It was hard for me, and I have no idea how he managed to sit in a room and endure while strangers were deciding his destiny and his fate". Many more were still expressing outrage that the Minnesota police officer who shot Philando Castile was acquitted Friday.

Jurors deliberated more than 52 hours over six days before a judge declared a mistrial for the 79-year-old comedian on Saturday.

He reminded prosecutors and the defense that "a mistrial is neither vindication nor victory for anybody".

She sued Cosby in a civil suit and settled for an undisclosed amount in 2006. Cosby's lawyer says he and Constand were lovers sharing a consensual sexual encounter. He pressed for an acquittal for the actor and said: "We're talking about all the man's tomorrows".

Cosby broke barriers as the first black actor to star in a network show, "I Spy", in the 1960s and created the top-ranked "Cosby Show" two decades later, starring as kindly Dr. Cliff Huxtable.

Under questioning from her lawyer, Cosby acknowledged that he had obtained several prescriptions for quaaludes in the 1970s for the objective of offering the powerful sedative to women he wanted to have sex with.

He said he gave Constand three half-tablets of the allergy medicine Benadryl before the "petting" began.

But a lawyer representing many of his accusers, Gloria Allred, said she was hoping the prosecution would push for a retrial.

She said that Cosby brought her three blue pills, saying they would help her relax and assuring her they were safe. Cosby has given a sealed deposition in the case.

Dozens of women accuse Cosby of assaulting them, but statutes of limitation rules mean he was allowed to be tried for Ms Constand's allegation only.

"This isn't talking to a trustee".

"But the entertainer had kept positive, McMonagle said: "... some of the most aggravating parts of our trial he kept us going, telling jokes, cracking a smile". Steele said he and prosecutors Kristen Feden and M. Stewart Ryan "will evaluate and review" the case.

"There are some things in this case that should be fuzzy. Why? I am a truth-teller".
