Inauguration Day For New Members Of The Dallas City Council

While President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 is recognized as the declaration that freed US slaves, Confederate states didn't recognize the Union decree. It was on Juneteenth that Union General Granger read "General Order No. 3" on the balcony of Galveston's Ashton Villa.

Williams also says the event continues to grow every year and they hope Juneteenth will move to an even bigger venue in the coming years.

Juneteenth is celebrated nationally as a way to commemorate emancipation from slavery in Texas on June 19 in 1865.

On June 19, 1865, Major Gen. Gordon Granger came to Galveston, Texas, to inform a reluctant community that President Abraham Lincoln two years earlier had freed the slaves and to press locals to comply with his directive. While it is not as well-known or widely taught in schools as other dates in history, it is one of the most important.

The event also stressed the importance of Juneteenth.

"This year, we made a decision to celebrate Juneteenth in a different way", Saunders said.

Families visited the Booker T. Washington Center to recognize Juneteenth, the State Holiday will be observed across the nation today. It's not just a day for the descendants of those freed slaves - it's a day that everyone in the country should celebrate, because the country became a freer place that day, and that benefitted everyone.

"Can you imagine the folks back then, saw the vision to purchase this property for $800, and look at where we are today", Turner said. Seeing different cultures and traditions come together year after year is what makes the celebration so special, she said. "It's important that we have events like this to represent our youth and help bring up leaders in our community", teen leader Julian Hudspeth said. "It gives you the buoyancy when something is up against you, it doesn't really penetrate your spirit", she said.
