Jessica Chastain To Play Lead Villain In 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix'

The Hollywood Reporter revealed Wednesday that Jessica Chastain is in talks to play the villain in the upcoming movie, which recently landed a director in screenwriter Simon Kinberg.

The film will be based on the comic storyline The Dark Phoenix Saga, a pivotal moment in the X-Men comics where Jean Grey gains the powers of a cosmic entity called the Dark Phoenix. The fact that she's going to be lending her talent to X-Men: Dark Phoenix makes this project even more enticing. This marks his directorial debut, taking the reins from Bryan Singer, who directed Days of Future Past, Apocalypse and the 2000 original X-Men film and its 2003 sequel, X2. These newly confirmed cast members include nearly the entire group of mutants that has been introduced or re-introduced in the First Class trilogy.

Kinberg is producing with Hutch Parker and Lauren Shuler Donner. X-Men: Dark Phoenix cast includes Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, and Kodi Smit-McPhee, all set to reprise their roles from previous movies. On the negative side, he wrote X-Men: Apocalypse, and, you know, Fantastic Four. Chastain would play Lilandra, who heads an alien empire called the Shi'ar. But they were re-cast as younger versions for Apocalypse, similarly to how Fassbender, McAvoy and Lawrence replaced Ian McKellan, Patrick Stewart and Rebecca Romijn in X-Men: First Class. Dark Phoenix was an extended storyline that ran in issues of The Uncanny X-Men throughout 1980.

The movie is prepping for a Montreal shoot and has a November 2, 2018 release date.

The Dark Phoenix was incorporated into "X-Men: Last Stand", though it was a split personality that Professor Charles Xavier embedded into Jean's subconscious.

20th Century Fox is ready to take on the Dark Phoenix.
