Jo Cox's husband 'awed' by togetherness celebrations on anniversary of killing

More than 108,000 get-togethers are happening across the country, according to the event's website, including bake-offs, barbecues and games of football.

One year on from her death, more than 100,000 events are expected around the country, collectively named The Great Get Together, to celebrate the life of the 41-year-old mother of two.

Jo Cox was campaigner on issues relating to the Syrian Civil War, and founded and chaired the all-party parliamentary group Friends of Syria.

Mrs Cox was murdered in her constituency on June 16 previous year.

"I think we're getting through, maybe it will take a while but the message will get through". Jo Cox's passion was about bringing communities together so it is important we all link together as a community especially with what is happening in the world.

"Isn't it interesting actually, the person that murdered Jo Cox, who shouted political slogans as he murdered her, isn't seen or held up as somehow representing a bigger community and yet people who commit those kinds of acts, telling us that they are doing it in the name of Islam, we allow them sometimes to get away with demonising a whole community.

As she so poignantly described in her maiden speech: 'We are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us.' Her warmth, generosity and compassion will be a lasting legacy", he said.

"We will not go back to a "them and us" culture where distrust and hate exist and the best way to help end prejudice is by talking to each other and understanding our various communities".

St. Peter's Church of which Knight is the leader of, will hold its "Great Get Together" on Sunday.

She said the response to the Great Get Together showed people had an appetite for something positive after the "really horrendous" things that had happened in the past 12 months.

The event was devised by Mr Cox to ensure that his wife's life and work was foremost during the anniversary, not the division and hatred that motivated her killer, Thomas Mair, a white supremacist (News, 25 November). A desire for unity and togetherness rather than the divisiveness of politics and the public debate in recent years.

Organised by the Jo Cox Foundation "The Great Get Together" is already being supported by a wide range of organisations. "Just moments that don't fixate on the differences but focus on those things that we have in common".

"We need even more so after Manchester (terror attack) and after London (terror attack) and after the election, after the referendum, just to say, let's talk about those things that we have in common".
