Leeds United Set To Appoint Former APOEL Coach As New Manager

Leeds United have appointed former Spain global Thomas Christiansen as their new head coach, the club have confirmed.

Christiansen was named as Garry Monk's successor on Thursday after leaving his previous role with APOEL - the 44-year-old having led them to the Cypriot league title last season.

One of the first tasks Christiansen will face is adding to his current squad that finished seventh in the Sky Bet Championship last season, with hope it will be enough for Leeds to break into the top-six next year.

The Danish-born 44-year-old is now negotiating personal terms with the club.

Christiansen was approached for talks by United owner Andrea Radrizzani after taking APOEL to the last 16 of the Europa League this season.

However, it is understood that Christiansen has won Radrizzani's approval and the club are now negotiating the terms of his contract.

Sky Sports, as well as other media outlets, have claimed that Leeds have handed the job to Christiansen, who has reportedly left his position as manager of Apoel Nicosia in Cyprus. That came a day after APOEL lost the Cypriot Cup final to Apollon Limassol.

Speakign after the announcement, the club's Managing Director Angus Kinnear said: "We are delighted to make this announcement today as it successfully concludes what has been a thorough and extensive search".

"We are confident we have found a man who can work with us to take the club to the next level".

Christiansen also turned out for German side Hannover.Spain twice in 1993 - enjoyed a lengthy career as a striker, starting out at Barcelona before moving to Villarreal, Racing Santander and Hannover.

He represented La Roja at Under-21 level before winning two senior caps, scoring once.
