Man United complete deal to make Swedish defender their first summer signing

"I am thrilled to be joining Manchester United".

Lindelof is in line to become the second centre-back signed by United manager Jose Mourinho following last year's £30 million capture of Ivory Coast worldwide Eric Bailly from Villarreal.

Victor Lindelof admits that while he will miss Benfica, the centre-back found it a "very easy" decision to move to Manchester United.

The Premier League club have since confirmed the signing with Lindelof expected to make his debut on the summer tour of the United States of America in July.

The England defender appears to become one of the fall guys of Jose Mourinho's summer recruitment drive at Old Trafford, with reports suggesting he will make way for £30.7million capture Victor Lindelof.

Lindelof has been a long-time target for United as they look to bolster their defensive options ahead of a return to the Champions League.

An announcement on ManUtd.com last weekend confirmed that United had reached an agreement with Benfica to sign the 22-year-old subject to a medical and personal terms. The latter's domineering performances have been a major positive from United's season, and Lindelof's watchful method of defending, in practice at least, should be a fine complement.

Having started his career at Vasteras SK in the lower tiers of Swedish football, Lindelof signed for Benfica as a 17-year-old in December 2011. He went on to play 73 times for the Lisbon outfit and has also earned 12 caps for Sweden. He won three Primeira Liga titles and was selected for the national team for Euro 2016 in France.

The Sweden worldwide comes into a side that are set to release compatriot Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer, although the veteran striker will continue his rehabilitation from serious knee ligament damage with them.

Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are set to depart this summer, and Mourinho wants to replace them with Real Madrid's Alvaro Morata and Torino's Andrea Belotti.
