May to form minority 'government of certainty'

May to form minority 'government of certainty'

"If. the Conservative Party has won the most seats and probably the most votes, it will be incumbent on us to ensure that we have that period of stability and that is exactly what we will do".

"I don't think Theresa May and this government have any credibility", Corbyn said, predicting that there could be another election within months. "All over the world, people are rising up against austerity and massive levels of income and wealth inequality".

May has said that she will begin to form her government, with the support of the DUP (Democratic Unionists Party).

While Corbyn would have likely faced removal as party leader if results had been as dire for Labour as originally predicted, presiding over Thursday's gains will probably cement his status at the head of the party for some time.

There were upsets elsewhere in the UK: In Scotland. the Scottish National Party was on course for significant losses.

Labour performed above all expectations at the ballot box, winning 262 seats.

Theresa May clung to her job as Prime Minister only by arranging a coalition with the ten members of Northern Ireland's Democratic Union Party, giving her a bare three-vote majority in the 650-vote House of Commons.

People demonstrate on Whitehall, central London, Saturday June 10, 2017, after the British general election result.

Of the agreement she said: "This will allow us to come together as a country and channel our energies towards a successful Brexit deal that works for everyone in this country, securing a new partnership with the European Union which guarantees our long-term prosperity".

May's party won 318 seats, 12 fewer than it had before the snap election, and eight short of the 326 needed for an outright majority. No party secured a majority and May was left scrambling to form a coalition government.

The Labour Party, under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, meanwhile gained at least 29 seats, shattering the Conservatives' hope of gaining a clear validation of their Brexit strategy.

Britain's right-wing media, which had rallied behind May's election campaign and against the opposition Labour party, changed its tune in the wake of the snap election, citing concerns over the way she had conducted the campaign and rumours of a challenge.

While Labour supporters claim victory with constituency gains across the United Kingdom, the pound has plummeted against the dollar and uncertainty looms ahead with the implications for Brexit negotiations unknown.

"We need to get started on the negotiations as soon as possible because time is ticking", German Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Roth told Germany's ZDF, according to Reuters. "The rebellion against her is just getting started". The issue didn't resonate on the campaign trail, and it didn't resonate at the ballot box either: The party got a slightly smaller percentage of the vote than last time. Now, she has no strong majority to back her policies through Parliament.

Instead, her election gamble has failed and she and her Conservative party have been weakened, with many on Friday questioning May's future as prime minister.
