Netflix Voices Support for Net Neutrality After CEO Flip Flop

Netflix Voices Support for Net Neutrality After CEO Flip Flop

In 2014, Netflix helped lead a coalition, which included eBay and Facebook, to lend support to net neutrality, and it took part in the September 2014 Internet Slowdown Day protest, where companies had symbolic loading symbols on their sites to show what might happen if net neutrality protections were erased. "There are other companies for whom this is a bigger issue, and we're joining this day of action to ensure the next Netflix has a fair shot to go the distance".

Netflix's participation is notable because it represents a bit of a of change of heart for the company.

After seemingly backing away from the fight for net neutrality, Netflix reversed course this week and re-iterated its support for an open and healthy internet.

Net Neutrality requires that internet providers treat all web traffic equally.

"The FCC wants to destroy net neutrality and give big cable companies control over what we see and do online".

A Netflix spokesperson clarified that, while Hastings was correct in saying that the repeal of net neutrality laws will not significantly impact the company's services, it acknowledges that it will not be in its current position without an open internet.

The move comes after Netflix CEO Reed Hastings made several comments indicating that the company was no longer really interested in net neutrality now that it had become a 100 million subscriber, global video powerhouse. Having large Internet streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon participate will likely be of huge benefit and hopefully make the case for a free and open internet.

The streaming video company said Thursday that it will "never outgrow" its advocacy for net neutrality, the idea that Internet service providers should not arbitrarily manipulate online content as it travels to consumers' screens.

"We had to carry the water when we were growing up and we were small", he said in May.

Ironically, Netflix would actually have more to gain if current FCC Chairman Ajit Pai completely reverses net neutrality.
