New Facebook feature lets you apply GIFs to posts and statuses

30 years to the day after CompuServe first introduced the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) to the world, Facebook has announced that its near-two-billion users globally can now comment on posts using the little animated images.

Facebook now lets its members to post GIFs as comments in a post and releases certain specially designed GIFs. The social media giant has also made several announcements around GIFs, which are now available to everyone on Facebook. It's now only available for comments, but Facebook may eventually also make it available for News Feed posts because user demand for GIFs shows no signs of abating.

Facebook's Messenger app has supported he ability to send GIFs for some time, with the company revealing that nearly 13 billion GIFs were sent on the app over the past year alone.

This will show the user trending GIFs and allow them to search for particular GIFs from various sources including Giphy.

The popularity can be gauged by the fact that almost 13 billion GIFs were sent on Messenger a year ago, that is roughly 25,000 GIFs every minute. Just write a comment in comment box and click on GIF button to select the GIF from popular sources.

The GIF is turning 30. Also, GIFs sharing on Messenger have tripled in the past year. But while Messenger's keyboard allowed users to choose GIFs directly from Facebook, the rest of the site was a different story. According to Facebook, more than 13 billion GIFs were sent previous year with that function.

Facebook also provided some statistics on how people have been using GIFs on Messenger. That translates to 25,000 GIFs per minute. Till then, you can weigh in on the age-old question of whether or not the word GIF is pronounced with a hard or soft G.
