Newtown parent won't view NBC interview of Alex Jones

"Infowars" host Jones never gave a direct answer in a segment Sunday night on NBC's "Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly.' Kelly has been criticized intensely for giving a platform to Jones, who has also called the September 11 attacks an inside job".

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The publicity and uproar in the days before Sunday's broadcast of Megyn Kelly's interview with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones didn't translate into ratings.

Kelly garnered just 3.5 million viewers for her latest episode of "Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly" - a major failure considering all the backlash she and NBC endured for scheduling a sit-down with the controversial Jones.

All of that free publicity couldn't push Megyn Kelly over the top. Money reports that while Kelly's interview with the "Infowars" host garnered its fair share of headlines, the actual broadcast flopped with advertisers' most-prized demo group.

An encore telecast of "American Ninja Warrior" averaged a 0.6/3 in 18-49 and 2.5 million viewers overall from 8-10 p.m. ET.

Although many called for Kelly and NBC not to run the interview with Jones (including Jones himself), the reaction after the segment aired was quite mixed.

Kelly's first episode came out of the gate rather strong, averaging 6.2 million viewers.

Kelly challenged Jones from the start, introducing him as a "radical conspiracy theorist" and promising to confront him on his "notorious lie" about Sandy Hook.

Megyn Kelly's episode featuring an interview with Alex Jones finished behind Fox, CBS and ABC in the same timeslot. Nicole Hockley, who lost her 6-year-old son Dylan in the shooting, publicly announced she wouldn't view the interview for "obvious" reasons. There were still many on both sides of the aisle who refused to watch the interview or saw the interview itself as reckless, but others praised Kelly for exposing Jones to the world. The station was the only NBC affiliate that would not give airtime to the program, which devoted a 15-minute segment of its one-hour running time to Jones.

Relatives of the shooting victims have called Jones' comments hurtful and say he has encouraged people to harass them.
