Sabres acquire D Beaulieu from Canadiens

Following this trade, the Sabres have seven picks in the 2017 National Hockey League draft.

"Beaulieu (age 24, 6'2", 205 pounds) appeared in his fifth National Hockey League season with the Canadiens in 2016-17, logging career highs in games played (74), goals (4), assists (24) and points (28).

Beaulieu was a first round pick (17th overall) in the 2011 NHL Draft. Beaulieu's days with the Canadiens appeared to be numbered after the team signed KHL defenseman Jakub Jerabek back in May. He opened the regular season on Montreal's top pairing with Shea Weber.

Over the last few days, there was plenty of chatter about the Habs looking to move Beaulieu before today's 3:00 p.m. ET roster freeze.

What made Nate so successful was his time in the QMJHL when he played four seasons with the Saint John Sea Dogs putting up 152 points in 233 games with 206 penalty minutes and a massive plus 124 rating. Montreal was in danger of losing Beaulieu in the expansion draft, while Buffalo has room to protect him.

The 24 yr. old Beaulieu joins 22 yr. old Rasmus Ristolainen and 23 yr. old Jake McCabe in the young but inconsistent category for the Buffalo Sabres, but new head coach Phil Housley looks to have some mobility as a base with which to revamp his defense-corps.
