Son of Ex-Padre on Life Support After Freak Baseball Accident

The son of a former Atlanta Braves player is on life support after a baseball accident, and has already endured five surgeries.

Lockhart's son, 15-year-old Jason Lockhart, was playing in a SC baseball tournament on June 17 when he was hit by a ball as he crossed home plate, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The initial injury occurred as Jason was crossing home plate at the same moment the catcher was throwing the ball back to the pitcher.

The ball broke his nose and Jason received stitches. Two days later, during a follow up doctor's visit, his nose began bleeding uncontrollably. A CT scan eventually showed a tear inside his nose was actually a laceration on one of his arteries.

Keith Lockhart played for 10 seasons in Major League Baseball on teams including the Padres, Braves and Kansas City Royals before retiring in 2003. The bleeding was determined to be coming from his nose and not his brain, according to 11Alive.

He had surgery on Tuesday to fix the fracture, but on Wednesday the doctors discovered an artery was cut by the fracture in his nose.

According to a Facebook post by Lockhart's daughter, Sydney, who also has been providing updates on her brother's condition, Jason was placed on life support Friday. They went into both arteries on each side of his nose and cut off the blood supply.

Sydney Lockhart reports there has been no additional bleeding since that operation, and that surgeons hope to confirm that with the procedure planned for today. Sydney told 11Alive that Jason was in surgery on Sunday, but he will likely be on the ventilator for a few more days.

"Thank you for those that have sat with us in the middle of the night while Jason was in surgery, prayed with us, cried with us, distracted us, brought food and snacks, and the many texts and emails full of scripture, love, prayers, or anything on your hearts to reach out to us".

Throughout the entire ordeal, the Lockharts have expressed gratitude for words of support and prayer from fans.
