Staff Had to Talk Trump Out of Firing Mueller — NY Times

The development comes a day after the daily reported that Mueller had extended his probe into determining whether the President tried to obstruct justice by suggesting to top intelligence and law enforcement officials that they end the Russian Federation investigation.

But Trump's tweet seemed to acknowledge that the federal investigation is indeed expanding from Russian hacking and collusion into possible obstruction of justice stemming from the president's decision to fire Comey.

U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat from California, said she is becoming "increasingly concerned" that Trump will terminate both Mueller and Rosenstein.

Rosenstein was among those who advised Sessions to recuse himself, according to officials briefed on the matter. But a department official said no one asked for the statement and Rosenstein acted on his own.

Mueller's office is also probing Jared Kushner's business dealings and finances are as part of his probe into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election, the Washington Post reports. The number has now reached a dozen, with more on the way, Carr told the Times.

Trump and his White House have offered various explanations for Comey's abrupt ouster, including that he lost the confidence of the bureau's rank and file - a suggestion flatly dismissed by acting director Andrew McCabe. Trump had viewed Sessions' recusal as unnecessary, even though Justice Department regulations made it nearly impossible to avoid.

He said the investigation could get dragged out if people of interest refuse to cooperate or if Trump uses executive privilege.

"I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Nice", the President tweeted.

But people close to Mr. Trump say he is so volatile they can not be sure that he will not change his mind about Mr. Mueller if he finds out anything to lead him to believe the investigation has been compromised. Comey's firing likely will be part of that probe.

Rosenstein earlier this month confirmed he had the ultimate authority to hire or fire Mueller, but said he has been given a wide berth to conduct the probe.

Rosenstein handed the reigns of that investigation over to independent Special Counsel Robert Mueller about one week after Comey's dismissal.

If Rosenstein recuses himself, Brand, a Trump appointee, would become the top Justice official overseeing Mueller's work.

Angered by reports in Breitbart News and other conservative news outlets that Mr. Mueller was close to Mr. Comey, Mr. Trump in recent days has repeatedly brought up the political and legal implications of firing someone he now views as incapable of an impartial investigation.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein issued a statement on Thursday urging Americans to "exercise caution before accepting as true any stories attributed to anonymous 'officials, ' particularly when they do not identify the country - let alone the branch or agency of government - with which the alleged sources supposedly are affiliated".
