Student freed by North Korea has severe neurological injury

Yesterday we learned that University of Virginia student Otto Warmbier, who was arrested and put on trial in North Korea a year ago, has been in a coma ever since then.

- The father of an American college student released by North Korea and now hospitalized in a coma says his son was "brutalized" by his captors.

Foreman said they had "absolutely no information" about the type of care Warmbier received in North Korea, but Kanter noted that when Warmbier arrived his skin was "in good condition", and he was "well nourished".

Warmbier's release comes as three other USA citizens are still being held in North Korea.

For Yun, a longtime Asia hand who joined the foreign service in 1985, the trip was the culmination of a series of delicate and rare conversations between the USA and North Korean officials that transpired since President Donald Trump took office. He called on the country to release three other Americans now held there.

The University of Virginia student was medically evacuated from North Korea and arrived in Cincinnati late on Tuesday. "When Otto was first taken, we were advised by the past administration to take a low profile while they worked to obtain his release", Warmbier said.

United States officials have repeatedly said Rodman is travelling to North Korea as a private citizen, despite media speculation he is working as an unofficial emissary for Trump.

"His neurological condition can be best described as a state of unresponsive wakefulness", Dr. Daniel Kanter said. "There's no excuse for the way North Koreans treated our son".

"I know you have many questions about what transpired".

North Korea has said that Warmbier's brain damage is the result of botulism that he contracted after taking a sleeping pill. "He doesn't deserve this", Fred Warmbier told The Cincinnati Enquirer in an interview last month.

He said Otto "is not in great shape right now" and that his family is "adjusting to a different reality".

Former NBA basketball player Dennis Rodman speaks to the media as he leaves for North Korea's Pyongyang, at Beijing Capital International Airport, China, June 13, 2017.

He said he and his wife grew frustrated with the lack of progress and with the Obama administration's instructions not to talk about their son's case publicly out of concern it would upset the North and make a release less likely. Blue-and-white ribbons in the school's colors were tied around trees and utility poles all the way along the city's main road in a show of support. "We continue our discussions with the North Korean regime regarding the release of the three other American citizens that have been detained".

"We're proud of him, too", some in the crowd shouted back.

Warmbier was taken into custody in January 2016 and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in March last year. According to the Washington Post, Rodman gave the book to North Korea Sports Minister Kim Il Guk with the intention of him giving it to President Kim Jong Un. "So we're looking to the future".
