Waze expands carpool service, gives Uber a run for the money

The fees are never greater than 54 cents per mile, the federal mileage rate. Thousands use it daily, according to Waze.

In addition, Waze Carpool users reportedly may start to see new ads popping up while using the app. Despite the presence and similar services offered by other cab-hailing firms, it seems the Waze Carpooling business is rapidly growing.

"Carpooling takes density and doing it on a limited capacity, you can only learn so much", Fried said. The company boasts that riders pay no more than the IRS' mileage reimbursement rate of 54 cents per mile, and all of that money now goes to the driver. It connects drivers and riders with similar destinations, so they can commute together, resulting in fewer cars on the road (something Angelenos likely won't mind a bit).

Waze Carpool launched in San Francisco in May 2016.

That's according to a survey of 4,500 people conducted previous year by the Shared-Use Mobility Center, a group that focuses on public transit and ways to reduce the number of cars on the road. It's only common sense that the company would want to bring its carpooling service to one of the most traffic jam-ridden cities in the country. But the company will be amassing data on commuters and their travel habits.

While carpooling has been around for decades, it's never been particularly popular.

The system is supposed to work correctly as long as people wake up in time and leave their houses when the app says they should.

Waze won't give specific numbers on its carpooling service, but Fried says the carpooling app is now doing at least 2,000 rides per week in the Bay Area, its only US market. It's now experimenting with another commute-hour option called Shuttle that makes designated stops on routes in two test markets - San Francisco and Chicago. The payments are far less than what ridesharing services such as Uber and Lyft charge. But there are caveats: Waze Carpool rides need to be reserved hours in advance and can be used up to only twice per day.
