Adobe to Finally Kill Flash After Years of Decline

Adobe to Finally Kill Flash After Years of Decline

Adobe on Tuesday announced plans to officially "end-of-life" Flash Player; it will cease to update and distribute Flash at the end of 2020.

Adobe has announced that it will stop updating the Flash Player which is expected to shutdown by 2020. Adobe issued a statement on the same, and there's a long blog post explaining why this is happening.

"Adobe will also remain at the forefront of leading the development of new web standards and actively participate in their advancement", the firm said.

In 2010, Apple cofounder Steve Jobs famously wrote a scathing letter about Flash, saying iPhone and iPads would never support the software.

Adobe will continue to support Flash on a number of major OSs and browsers that now support Flash content through the planned EOL. (To run a Flash program, your computer must download a file, which, historically, hackers have been able to take advantage of to gain access to your machine.) On mobile-or an unplugged-in laptop-Flash can also be a battery hog. The announcement signals the end of a product that was once the primary method for delivering education, gaming and video content.

From last few years, Google is continually working to displace Adobe Flash with modern web technologies on the Chrome browser. It allows you to play games online or stream radiation station or watch videos. "Microsoft will phase out support for Flash in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer ahead of this date".

Adobe's partners all made comments about the end of Flash.

The company says it will continue to support Flash through the planned EOL, which means you won't be missing out on security patches and browser compatibility. "Today usage is only 17% and continues to decline", Chrome's Anthony Laforge said.

Adobe said it does not expect Flash's sunset to have an impact on its bottom line.

Microsoft will disable Flash by default in Edge and IE in mid to late 2019, but users will be able to re-enable it, though they'll need for on a site-by-site basis for Edge.

Mid-to-late 2018. Microsoft Edge will require explicit permission for Flash to run every time it's encountered. Mozilla Firefox users will have an option to choose which websites run Flash with Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) enabling them to use Flash up to 2020.
