Australian woman killed by police after calling 911, family says

A Minneapolis police officer fatally shot a woman after she allegedly called 911 for help.

Minneapolis police officer fatally shot a woman who called 911 because of a possible assault on Saturday, July 15. The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, following standard procedure, according to the Star Tribune.

But the BCA offered few other details on what precipitated the shooting and, it said, neither responding officer had turned on their body cameras before the shooting.

Local civil rights activist Mel Reeves called for the officer who shot Justine to be prosecuted. While the pair was not legally husband and wife just yet, Ruszczyk was preferred to be referred to by her would-be husband's surname, Damond.

In the wake of the incident, it was revealed that the officers did not have their body cameras turned on, and the squad camera "did not capture the incident".

"Did the police officers turn the cameras off?" is a yes/no question, the answer to which could give the mayor and public a measure of comfort, although that's not the primary mission of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, of course.

Justine, who lived on Sydney's Northern Beaches before she relocated to Minneapolis, Minnesota, was a popular meditation coach and motivational speaker, as well as a trained veterinarian.

The fatal shooting happened late Saturday night near the intersection of 51st Street and Washburn Avenue South, in the city's Fulton neighborhood. According to her fiance's 22-year-old son, Zach Damond, she had called police to report a possible assault in an alleyway behind their home. "She was just infectious, not just for me".

Ruszczyk had been living in the States for three years and was planning her wedding next month to her fiancé Don Damond.

Justine Damond, previously known as Justine Ruszczyk, was shot through the door of a squad vehicle after she had gone outside in her pyjamas, it is claimed.

"She thought there was something bad that was happening and next thing I know, they take my best friend's life". The agency didn't release the officers' names.

"She believed we have more power over our circumstances - even our genes - than we have been taught", Davis-Suggs said.

Minneapolis Mayor Besty Hodges said in a statement she is "heartsick and deeply disturbed" by the shooting. "I'm so done with all this violence". "I want to know more", she said, calling on the BCA to share "as much information with all of us".

A vigil for Ms Damond held on Sunday attracted hundreds of people.

As authorities continued to investigate, the woman's family members released a statement Monday through Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, saying: "We are trying to come to terms with this tragedy and to understand why this has happened".
