Communal violence over cow protection must be curbed sternly: Modi

Communal violence over cow protection must be curbed sternly: Modi

At an all-party meeting held on the eve of the Monsoon session of Parliament beginning Monday, the PM reportedly said states must take exacting actions on "cow vigilantes".

"Maintaining law and order is the responsibility of state governments and wherever these incidents are taking place, the state governments must deal firmly with it".

"People are trying to give it a political and communal colour, but it is not in favour of the country", he added. "However, people must know that there is a law to protect the cow and the violation of law is not an alternative".

The prime minister also urged all parties to extend their support to the government in fighting corruption.

He said former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram had already said that the GST roll-out will be raised during the session in view of the fact that the law in its present form was not the law that was originally drafted by the Congress party.

Prime Minister Modi informed all the leaders that due to preponing the Budget by a month, there would be a balanced nature of capital expenditure profile in this financial year.

"If they demand discussion on some current issues, we will discuss the same in the business advisory committee and the chairman will decide the time and date of discussion", Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said. He also called upon all political parties to ensure that everyone votes and no vote is wasted.

Opposition parties have often alleged that successive governments have used the CBI and other agencies as a political tool to arm-twist political rivals.

But the Opposition's main concerns are the farm crisis and the jobless growth."These are the government's biggest failures, apart from the vitiated social ambience as communal rhetoric and violence grow unabated", Congress senior leader Anand Sharma said.

"I believe, all political parties, all MPs, will take significant decisions in national interest, will engage with high standard of debate and will try to provide value addition in all issues, value addition in all system", he said.

"The parliament is the forum of discussion".

Among opposition leaders who attended the meeting were Ghulam Nabi Azad (Congress), Sharad Pawar (NCP), Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M), Mulayam Singh Yadav (SP), Farooq Abdullah (NC) and D Raja (CPI).

However, no one from the JD (U) or the Trinamool Congress were present.
