FAA investigates why jet almost landed on other planes

Air Canada Flight 759, which took off from Toronto for San Francisco on Friday, July 7, almost landed on a crowded taxiway - rather than its intended runway - when coming in for a landing at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

It says Flight AC759 from Toronto was cleared to land on a runway last Friday, but the pilot "inadvertently" lined up for a taxiway where four aircraft were waiting to depart.

The controller then tells the Air Canada pilot to pull up and go around. "The plane made another approach and landed without incident", the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

As the Air Canada jet thanks airport control, another pilot, audibly agitated buzzes in: 'Where is this guy going? "He's on the taxi lane", the second pilot says in the recording. The taxiway runs parallel to the runway.

"United One, Air Canada just flew directly over us".

An Air Canada spokesman told Fox News that the flight landed without incident a little later and that the airline is investigating the incident.

Captain Aimer said that if the tower hadn't been able to swiftly redirect the Air Canada plane, disaster would have followed.

"Yeah I saw that guys", the control tower responds.

The incident, which ultimately ended with the plane correcting course and landing safely, has shocked the aviation world.

Air traffic control then tells the pilot to initiate a "go-around", which is when a pilot circles the airport in order to line up for another landing.

'Canada 759, confirmed to land on runway 28-Right, there is no one on 28-Right but you'.

In separate statements, both Air Canada and its pilots' union said they could not comment further since the incident is under investigation.

'This is pretty huge, ' he said. Many instances could go unreported, and many times they involve smaller planes at smaller airports, he said.

This Air Canada flight was from Toronto.

Thirty-four people died in February 1991 when a USAir Boeing 737 landed on a taxiway at Los Angeles airport and collided with a commuter plane, causing a massive explosion.
