Francois Named to Davey O'Brien Watch List

One local player that wasn't included on the Unitas watch list is, Duke's Daniel Jones, is coincidentally the only one from a state school mentioned as a candidate for the the other award honoring the best quarterback in college football.

White is no stranger to Davey O'Brien recognition, as he was a "Great 8" performer following his Hilltopper debut vs. Rice to begin the 2016 season. Jones found his groove late in the season, tossing 10 touchdowns versus just one interception over the final seven weeks after throwing six touchdown passes and eight INTs through the first five weeks of the season. He threw for over 300 yards in 8-of-14 games, multiple touchdowns in 11-of-14 and notched a passer rating over 200 in 6-of-14 contests. All nominees are required to have previously started at least one game at their current institution.

USC has never had a quarterback win the O'Brien Award, but there have been more than a few Trojan finalists, including Matt Leinart, Carson Palmer, Todd Marinovich and Rodney Peete.

The Davey O'Brien Award is presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award.

The award's namesake played for TCU in the late 1930s. They are attributes that are every bit as important as the quarterback's completion rate or number of touchdowns scored.

The award is overseen by the Davey O'Brien Foundation, which is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, and has given away more than $1 million in scholarships and university grants to high school and college athletes. From that list, the Foundation and the Selection Committee will announce the three finalists on Monday, Nov. 20. The 2017 Davey O'Brien Award victor will be announced live Thursday, December 7 on The Home Depot College Football Awards.
