North Korea Trade with China Rises Despite Sanctions

North Korea threatened to rain down destruction on the USA if the United Nations imposes new sanctions on the regime.

After the launch, the United States drafted a resolution to impose stronger sanctions on the North, according to several senior UN diplomats.

"With its latest successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile, North Korea has demonstrated intent and capability to hit the USA homeland - and as President Trump said, we must never allow this to happen", said Gardner who chairs the Senate East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Subcommittee.

Trump's comments came a little over a week after North Korea successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the United States. He has been urging the UN Security Council to impose a "complete economic embargo" requiring all member nations to cut off all finance and trade with the North, with a few limited humanitarian exceptions. Still, after meeting with President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit on July 8, Trump tweeted they'd had had an "excellent" meeting on trade and North Korea.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said China's cooperation on North Korea was "uneven" when he spoke to lawmakers last month, saying US officials were concerned about actions by both the government and other entities in China.

The new measures would target Chinese small-and-medium sized financial institutions and shell companies suspected of "funneling cash" into Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs.

All coal imports from North Korea happened before Feb 18, and "this is a sign of China's implementing the UNSC resolutions", Huang said. However, North Korean exports increased by 29.1 percent to $1.67 billion. "Trade related to DPRK people's livelihood, especially those that reflect humanitarianism should not be influenced by the sanctions", Huang said. Those imports all came before February 18, an illustration of how China has enforced sanctions, Huang said.

The volume of Chinese imports of North Korean iron ore almost doubled in the first five months of 2017 compared to the same period previous year, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. But even before the test - which Washington and Seoul labeled "destabilizing and unlawful" - Americans and many people in the Asia-Pacific region held negative views of North Korea and its nuclear weapons program. While North Korea claimed that it could strike anywhere in the world, most experts initially assessed the range to be somewhere around 4,000 miles, which would put Alaska within firing range.

U.S. President Donald Trump condemned the trade relationship between the two Asian nations and is now questioning whether Beijing is really doing its part on neutralizing North Korean threat.
