Qatar Airways to launch new service to Ukraine

The existing codeshare deals will end on March 25, 2018.

A long-running campaign spearheaded by American, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines-supported by many of their union groups-alleges Gulf carriers violate the terms of those Open Skies treaties because they benefit from large government subsidies that enable them to cut prices and expand their networks.

Both Middle East airlines deny they are state subsidised.

"We are disappointed", Akbar al-Baker, chief executive of Qatar Airways, said on Thursday.

American says it didn't solicit the investment. "We are committed to doing everything we can to continue to support our team members and ensure that there is fair competition between American and the Gulf carriers".

Qatar Airways has announced that it will launch a new direct service to Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, from August 28, 2017.

However, American Airlines chief executive Doug Parker said in a letter to staff last month that "We aren't particularly excited about Qatar's outreach" and that it was puzzling given the U.S. carrier's very public stance on state support given to Gulf carriers.

The Middle Eastern carrier - which holds ten per cent of LATAM and a 20 per cent stake in British Airways-owner IAG - is seeking a ten per cent stake in its rival.

When Qatar Airways launched Atlanta-Doha flights past year, it sparked a dispute with Delta over a gate at the airport and prompted Delta to withdraw its sponsorship of the Fox Theatre, which hosted a gala for Qatar.

American Airlines said it would also end a marketing agreement with Etihad Airways PJSC.

"Etihad Airways and numerous leading consumer and business groups in the United States have categorically rejected the allegations of American and the two other dominant USA carriers regarding violations of the relevant air transportation agreements".
