Trusted Contacts now on iOS

Trusted Contacts now on iOS

Apple's ecosystem just got a little bit less sticky thanks to Google's location sharing app launching on iOS.

Trusted contacts can request your location, but the app won't share that unless you don't respond within a set time. Last December on Android we introduced the Trusted Contacts app, a new way for you to let your friends and family know you're safe. If everything's fine, you can deny the request. But because I'll be alerted to requests, I'd happily add them to this app.

The idea is that if you're in the wild, or somewhere risky, you can set a time period, and after that, the app automatically shares your location with contacts.

The app also allowed contacts to receive your phone's location if it's offline - for occasions like hiking - when you might be in an area without coverage. With this, users are able to share their location with someone they trust - a friend or family member, for example - as well as giving these people access to certain information such as whether their phone has moved recently or if their battery is on the brink of powering down. This will allow users to easily enable permanent location sharing with selected contacts and find them directly within Google Maps.

The iOS version of the app comes with same features as the Android app. Google also announced that is has issued an update for Android users to ensure that the app is more user-friendly. The company has also updated the app to app support to 9 new languages, bringing total support to 25 languages across the world.

The New York Times unveiled a new version of its iOS app yesterday.
