Australian navy locate crashed U.S. military Osprey

A U.S. Osprey aircraft that crashed on Saturday has been located in waters off Australia's east coast. "Shortly after commencing survey operations in the area, the submerged aircraft was located".

The Osprey is created to take off like a helicopter and rotate its propellers to fly like a plane. That said, senior military leaders at U.S. Pacific Command, and their diplomatic counterparts at the American embassy in Tokyo, have held a series of talks on how to improve safety requirements for future Osprey operations, Capt. Davis told reporters at the Pentagon.

Onodera - who took over last week after the embattled Tomomi Inada resigned after a data cover-up scandal - also called on the Marines to provide information on the crash, to investigate its cause and to take preventative measures, a ministry spokeswoman said Monday.

Twenty three of the 26 people on board were rescued.

On Sunday, the Marines called off the search for the missing, saying the operation was transitioning to recovery-and-salvage efforts.

"Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic event and the Australian Government stands ready to support the USA further in any way we can", she said in a statement.

The Marine Corps had changed the search-and-rescue mission to a recovery mission that could last several months, as reported by Reuters.

The Marines had just wrapped up a major exercise with Australian forces and on Saturday were conducting training of their own when the accident happened.

Senator Payne said a number of ADF assets are involved in supporting the US-led recovery operation. In May 2015, an Osprey crashed during a training exercise in Hawaii, killing two Marines.

The ill-fated flight took place on the southern island of Okinawa, where a squadron of Ospreys is stationed at the US Marines' Futenma base, according to Japanese media.
