BBCI: Kenya election: Uhuru Kenyatta defeats Raila Odinga

Supporting the preliminary statement issued by the AU Observer Mission, he has urged the people of Kenya to maintain calm as they wait for the announcement of final results by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Preliminary results show the incumbent, President Uhuru Kenyatta, leading by nine percentage points with almost all the votes counted.

Chebukati said the electoral commission had called for an examination of the official tally papers from more than 40,000 polling stations around the country and would base the final result on the forms.

The opposition has continually made allegations of corrupted ballots since Monday's vote, but several global monitors from a group that included former USA secretary of state John Kerry, former South Africa president Thabo Mbeki and officials from the European Union, said they could find no credible evidence to support the contentions.

Supporters of Odinga have said an unofficial tally shows he won.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said despite the few challenges the election process was generally successful. On July 31, officials announced that Msando had been tortured and killed, alarming Kenyans who feared a recurrence of political violence fueled by ethnic divisions.

"I therefore look forward to continue working with you to strengthen further the brotherly relations and cooperation between our two countries as well as other EAC partner states in our quest to develop our region", Museveni said.

He first alleged that a hacker had gained access to the electoral commission's database and then accused the commission of concealing the actual results, which Odinga said proved he was the victor. Kenya's future is more important than any election.

Civic education in Africa still lags behind; We need a lot of civic education and be taught on how to vote peacefully and go back to work. "At the end of the day we shall do an audit and those questions will be answered", he said. Both are sons of late independence fighters: Kenya's first president Jomo Kenyatta and his deputy, Oginga Odinga.

Orengo spoke Friday evening ahead of an expected announcement by the election commission, which has disputed opposition allegations of vote-rigging.

"If they can open those servers, and we all look at it, we are prepared to accept the results of what is contained in those servers", James Orengo, chief election agent for the National Super Alliance opposition coalition, told reporters.

Another lovely addition was that about five million young Kenyans voted for the first time, and added a new dimension to politics in the country.

The electoral commission admitted that hackers had tried to access its database, but said they did not succeed. A few miles from Kibera, there are Land Rover dealerships and new glass high rise towers, but the slum remains crime-ridden and poor, much of it without plumbing or electricity.

Police shot dead one protester in Nairobi.

Violence broke out this week in some opposition strongholds in parts of the capital, Nairobi, and elsewhere.

Many Kenyans have left Nairobi in recent days, bracing for violence.

The election is a test of democracy in the East African economic power.
