Boston Red Sox topple Chicago White Sox

BOSTON The game between the Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox scheduled for Wednesday night was postponed because of rain.

Seven of Boston's last 15 games at Fenway have ended in a walk-off, including two of the last three. Gonzalez (1-1 with a 2.33 ERA in three starts since coming off the DL) is 6-1 with a 3.15 ERA in 11 career starts against the Red Sox.

The latest heroics come from Mitch Moreland, who delivered an opposite field solo shot into the Monster seats with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning.

Andrew Benintendi, given two games off to deal with a batting slump, had three hits, an RBI, two runs and two walks for Boston.

With the left-handed Carlos Rodon getting the start for Chicago, Morleand had started the game on the bench. Red Sox reliever Heath Hembree then picked off Nicky Delmonico for the inning's second out. That's when Moreland, who entered the game as a defensive substitution, went the other way to give the Red Sox the victory. The homer was his 13th hit in his first eight games. Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts and Christan Vazquez each contributed base hits in the winning effort for the Red Sox. Aaron Bummer gave up the game-deciding run in the 11th, taking the loss to fall to 0-2 this season.

The reigning Cy Young Award victor was backed by two-run homers from rookie sensation Rafael Devers and Mookie Betts, and battled through 5 1/3 innings for his first win since June 23 - a 9-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox. The Red Sox only can take Sale's rest so far, Farrell reminded, penciling him in for games against the Yankees on August 13, Aug. 19 and Sept 3 with a pennant race on the line. While these close games may not be great for our blood pressure and often force us to stay up later than we'd hoped to, Red Sox fans can at least be comforted knowing that the wait has typically been worthwhile.
