British Columbia opposition leader resigns after fall from power

Coleman became the party's interim leader on Friday, after Clark officially announced she was stepping down as party leader and MLA for Kelowna West effective August 4.

Clark made her intentions known in a brief statement.

"I want to thank Christy Clark for her years of service to British Columbians, both as an MLA and as Leader of the BC Liberals". Before Clark announced her resignation, the NDP-Green parties held a 44 to 43 seat lead, meaning every MLA would have to be in the legislature to avoid defeat of the government. Judith Guichon she tried to convince Guichon to call an election. "She's a leader and she's a person who likes to take charge and I think that was her immediate reaction".

"When she came back to run, she really saved our party, saved our organization and put us on a very good footing and I think she can walk out with head high that she accomplished more than anybody thought she could".

"Together, we have achieved so much - winning a comeback election victory that nearly nobody thought possible, positioning British Columbia firmly as Canada's leading economy, and laying a strong foundation for future generations to achieve their dreams here". Her final accomplishment, however, was the courage to step down, certainly not when or how she wanted to but when it was the responsible thing to do. "You're going to see a remarkable opposition", he said.

The decision comes one month after the B.C. Liberals were defeated in a non-confidence vote in the legislature. "I wish her all the best in her future endeavours", he said in a release.

Clark's Liberals governed British Columbia for a total of 5,869 days or 16 years.

Clark will also be resigning as MLA of Kelowna West. The precarious NDP government and likely new election looming will probably entice a number of strong candidates to throw their hats into the ring, he said.

In response to Clark's resignation, Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver called her a "fierce advocate for British Columbia, here at home and around the world". While Clark said the government couldn't function under an NDP minority government due to the tight majority, the lieutenant-governor asked Horgan to form a government. This experience illustrated what we can achieve when members of this house work together.

In 2004, Clark left provincial politics and in 2003, announced she would seek the nomination of the Non-Partisan Association (NPA) to run for mayor in Vancouver.

A visibly emotional Coleman addressed the media in Penticton, following a Liberal caucus meeting, offering praise for Clark, and saying the party is determined to renew and move forward.

"When you look at voting here and internationally, people want something new", he said.
