Chinese men held for allegedly doing Nazi salute by German parliament

Handler was presumably referring to two Chinese tourists who were arrested after taking pictures of themselves making the Nazi salute by Germany's parliament building, the Reichstag.

The tourists were arrested after posing for photos while making the Nazi gesture in front of the historic Reichstag building, a popular tourist destination, on Saturday.

Criminal proceedings have been started against the middle-aged men for using symbols from a banned organisation. Conviction can carry a prison sentence of up to three years.

Using symbols or salutes linked to Hitler and Nazis is a very serious offense in Germany -two Chinese tourists learned that the hard way.

A criminal investigation will continue, though the tourists are being permitted to leave the country with their tour group, a police spokeswoman said Sunday. The security guards contacted the Berlin police, who took the tourists into custody.

But it is not clear how familiar foreign visitors are with the postwar constitutional statute, typically used to prosecute members of the far right.

According to the Mercator Institute for China Studies, a research foundation based in Berlin, the number of Chinese tourists to Germany swelled above 2 million in 2014. In 2013, a mainland Chinese tourist in Luxor, Egypt, discovered that a fellow countryman had carved his own hieroglyphics on the wall of a 3,500-year-old temple: "Ding Jinhao was here".
