Don't buy Microsoft (MSFT) Surface tablet

Don't buy Microsoft (MSFT) Surface tablet

At the heart of the issue is "poor predicted reliability" according to Consumer Reports, which says it has concerns as to how the Microsoft notebooks and tablets will hold up in comparison to rival hardware.

What's hugely important to point out here is that Consumer Reports' retraction of its recommendation appears entirely dependent upon subscriber survey answers. Consumer Reports has pulled its recommendation for several Microsoft Surface laptops over concerns about the series' reliability and rate of breakdowns.

The mag claims that the differences in estimated breakage rates between the devices of "most other brands" is "statistically significant". "Microsoft said its ".real-world return and support rates for past models differ significantly from Consumer Reports' breakage predictability".

However, Microsoft told CNN Tech it doesn't believe the findings accurately reflect Surface owners' "true experiences".

Shares of Microsoft were last seen down 0.6% at $72.05, with a consensus analyst price target of $80.19 and a 52-week range of $55.61 to $74.42.

Microsoft entered the hardware market with its first Surface tablet in 2012.

Microsoft also pointed out that the Surface Pro, for example, received high performance and versatility marks in Consumer Reports' laptop lab evaluations. Consumer Reports came to this conclusion after surveying around 90,000 laptop and tablet owners, finding that around 25 percent of Surface users had encountered problems. Because of this, Consumer Reports can not recommend the devices. It takes much more data, collected in aggregate, to make those predictions. The study is also used to determine the reliability of products like refrigerators, lawn mowers, televisions and more. Frozen computers, unexpected shutdowns and unresponsive screens were noted as complaints. Earlier this year, Consumer Reports declined to endorse Apple's Touch Bar-equipped MacBook Pro over inconsistent battery life performance, but updated its rankings after Apple released a software patch that fixed its issue.

But "it's not great" news since reliability "is one of the key elements" of systems, he added.
