Europe eggs scandal hits Hong Kong after shipment from contaminated farm revealed

Its announcement comes ahead of a planned meeting with ministers and other officials next month to discuss the crisis. The countries that have received the eggs are Britain, Sweden, Austria, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia and Denmark, along with non-EU Switzerland and Hong Kong, BBC reported.

However the country's veterinary and food administration said in a statement that the eggs were not risky to human health. The EU insists there is no threat to human health, but the World Health Organisation (WHO) says that when eaten in large quantities it can harm people's kidneys, liver and thyroid glands. However, food standards agencies played down the risks for anyone who already had the tainted eggs. In this case, it is thought to have been used to combat lice in some chicken farms.

Nearly all lab tests show that only very low levels of Fipronil - seven to 10 times lower than the maximum permitted - have been detected in eggs from the treated chickens, although one test in Belgium was above the European limit.

We don't know if they were placed in the market [for sale or production], or if the eggs were contaminated.

It emerged that around 700,000 eggs in the United Kingdom were implicated in the European egg contamination scandal.

Foods containing eggs have been recalled by Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Asda and Morrisons. Further away in Hong Kong, the government's Centre for Food Safety also identified two samples of imported Dutch eggs containing excessive levels of fipronil and asked shops to remove the products.

He said test results received overnight from the French food safety agency on affected eggs and egg products showed "the level of contamination does not present a risk for the consumer".

The European Commission now plans to hold a meeting with regulators and ministers on 26 September.
