Ezekiel Elliott suspended by the National Football League for six games

Elliot will be able to participate in preseason activities, but with the suspension taking effect he wouldn't be eligible to return to the team's active roster until October 23.

The NFL's letter said that Elliott must undergo clinical evaluation - and that, should counseling or treatment be recommended, that he comply with those recommendations.

Should Elliott's appeal drag into September, his suspension will be delayed accordingly.

In its statement, the league said their personal conduct advisors "were of the view that there is substantial and persuasive evidence finding supporting a finding that [Elliott] engaged in physical violence". Elliott was not charged or arrested because of what authorities in Columbus said was conflicting and inconsistent information. Among the evidence Elliott will be trying to fight are photographs like the ones TMZ published.

There are signs an extended legal battle, perhaps similar to the one involving New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady following the Deflategate saga, could be on the horizon, though.

The NFL revised its personal conduct policy three years ago after it was criticized for its handling of a case involving former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice.

According to simulations calculated by CBS's SportsLine, the Cowboys are projected to win 9.2 games with Zeke only playing in 10 games. The policy changes allowed National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell to suspend players for at least six games in domestic cases regardless whether or not the player was convicted of a crime.

Over the course of the past year, the league conducted an extensive investigation.

Elliott was also the subject of backlash in March after video posted online purportedly showed him pulling down a woman's top and exposing one of her breasts at a St. Patrick's Day parade.

There's no doubt losing Elliott, the league's reigning leader in rushing yards, for six games would be a massive setback for the Cowboys offense.

The Cowboys open the season against the Giants Week 1. "Our goal is for you to have as successful a career as possible". Randy Gregory will miss at least the entire regular season for multiple violations of the NFL's substance-abuse policy.

Two more defensive players could face suspensions.
