Fox and Hammond Promise Clean Brexit Outside Customs Union, Single Market

Over the coming 10 days, a number of Government papers will be published spelling out the UK's Brexit blueprint on key issues including the customs union, the Irish border, fisheries and agriculture. The UK wants to start talking about its post-Brexit relationship with the EU in order to reassure anxious businesses, citizens and investors, but the union has insisted that first exit arrangements should be determined.

Cabinet ministers from different ends of the Brexit spectrum have attempted to end infighting over Britain's transition away from the EU, with Philip Hammond and Liam Fox jointly stressing the United Kingdom will completely leave the single market and customs union after Brexit in 2019.

It's preparing to publish several papers, including plans for a new customs arrangement and a proposal on how to resolve the difficulties of a land border in Ireland.

"By triggering Article 50 in March of this year we leave in March 2019, what the transition period will look like is down to the negotiations", he said during a surprise appearance at Alex Salmond's show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

"We've been crystal clear that issues around our withdrawal and our future partnership are inextricably linked", a source in Britain's Brexit department said.

On his first official visit to Northern Ireland earlier this month, the Taoiseach even put forward his own suggestions for a "soft Brexit" - including the possibility of creating a new EU-UK customs union.

The bloc's chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, said last month there was "a clock ticking" on the talks.

After a summer of cabinet funding, the pair agreed there should not be a cliff-edge break when Britain leaves the European Union in March 2019.

The Sunday Telegraph reports one proposal will involve offering Irish citizens free movement in and out of the UK.

The Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported last week, citing three unnamed sources, Britain is willing to pay up to 40 billion euros ($47.1 billion) to the European Union as the bloc wants considerable progress on settling Britain's liabilities before Brexit talks resume.

David Davis, the Brexit secretary said the publication of the papers, which will begin this week, would mark "an important next step" towards delivering last year's referendum vote to leave the EU.

Brexit Secretary David Davis was warned by an European Union chief last night that he would be putting the security of British people at risk if he pulled out of pan-European crime-fighting agreements.
