In the United Kingdom, found eggs with toxins

Romanian authorities said on Thursday that one tonne of liquid egg yolk contaminated with fipronil had been found in a warehouse in the west of the country.

The eggs concerned were gathered on 11 July and bore the best before date of 27 July, from producers 2NL4382501 in the Netherlands.

The rise in the FSA's estimated number of contaminated eggs came after supermarkets in Germany and the Netherlands removed millions of eggs from their shelves last week amid contamination fears.

Fipronil is alllowed to be used in cats and dogs but not in animals which form part of the food chain, NOS writes.

European Union bodies immediately notified food safety authorities in Britain, France, Sweden and Switzerland after it emerged that eggs contaminated with the insecticide may have entered their territories.

In joint raids with Belgium, Dutch prosecutors said they had arrested "two managers at the company that allegedly used the substance at poultry farms", with Dutch media naming the suspects' company as Chickfriend.

Heather Hancock, Chairman of the Food Standards Agency, said: "I'm confident that acting quickly is the right thing to do".

The agency has stressed that the recall is precautionary and that it is "very unlikely that these eggs pose a risk to public health" as they represent a very small percentage of eggs consumed in the UK. But they say the number is a tiny fraction of the eggs consumed each year in the country.

Fipronil is a pesticide used in some disinfectant products and is banned in products around food-producing animals.

What is Fipronil and how did the egg scandal start? Last Friday, it said there was no evidence the United Kingdom was affected at all.

'We have now established that more eggs from affected farms than previously identified came to the UK.

Britain's Food Standards Agency said in a statement released on Thursday that almost 700,000 eggs from Dutch farms affected by the insecticide fipronil may have been distributed to Britain.

About 180 poultry farms in the Netherlands have also been temporarily shut in recent days while investigations are held.

As a result of the scandal, millions of eggs have been pulled from supermarket shelves in Germany as well as Belgium and the Netherlands.

Questions have been raised as to how long the Belgian food safety authorities knew of the contamination before they alerted the European Commission.

The Dutch agency for food security NVWA and the public prosecutor in the netherlands have formed an investigation team jointly with the services of inquiry with belgian, with the support of the european Office of the fonts Europol and the european body for judicial cooperation Eurojust.
