Look Up, Sky Watchers: The Perseid Meteor Shower Is Coming

Unfortunately, the light reflecting off the moon will make it more hard to see the streaking meteors.

Does the Perseid meteor shower pose any threat to humans? "A meteor is the fiery streak produced when interplanetary rubble-such as that left behind by comets-hits Earth's upper atmosphere and burns up".

Perseid meteor shower is going to occur this Saturday on August 12, 2017.

There will be an increase in clouds Thursday, and a better chance of a storm Friday morning and night, said meteorologist Jordan Dale of the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac.

The Perseids are an annual meteor shower that peaks in early-to-late August. These meteors are actually specks of rock that have broken off Comet Swift-Tuttle and continued to orbit the Sun until they vaporize in Earth's atmosphere.

Bill Cooke, a meteor expert from NASA, declared that sadly not many meteors will be seen in the sky, because -the moon will be too bright this year.

Comet Swift-Tuttle has been well documented each time it has come close to Earth.

Remember, any competing source of light - city lights, street lamps, auto headlights, cellphone screens, the Moon, etc - will prevent our eyes from completely adjusting to the darkness, and thus prevent us from seeing all the meteors that will be flashing overhead. "One as bright as the planet Venus shot across the sky about 9:30 o'clock".

Its name comes from the point at which the meteors appear to come from - its radiant - in the constellation of Perseus.

To make the most of the night, viewers are advised to go to a dark area as far away as possible from urban centres. Lie on your back and look straight up. Also, keep bright sources of light (the Moon included) out of your direct field of view.

Regardless of where you live, many provincial parks offer a great place to view these events, even if you have to stick to the parking lot at night.
