National Hurricane Center: 2 Tropical Cyclones May Form Off Florida

As forecasters monitor all of this tropical activity, NOAA announced Wednesday that it has increased its outlook for the number of storms expected this hurricane season. Between five and nine of those storms would be hurricanes, with two to five of them being major hurricanes of Category 3 or above. Officials with NOAA said a number of factors are pointing toward a more active season, including warmer waters across the tropical Atlantic.

An average season in the Atlantic has 12 named storms, six hurricanes and three major hurricanes.

Tropical Storm Franklin lost strength, but not form, over the Yucatan Peninsula Tuesday.

As the US looks ahead to a busy season of storms, Mexico is bracing for the tropical storm to strengthen into a hurricane Wednesday and make a second landfall Wednesday or early Thursday in the Mexican state of Veracruz.

Numerous storms could steer harmlessly over the open ocean, but having more storms usually means more threats to the coastline.

A tropical storm contains wind speeds of 39 miles per hour or higher and becomes a hurricane when winds reach 74 miles per hour. Historically, the peak comes between August and October. So far, the Atlantic basin has seen six named storms: Arlene in April; Bret and Cindy in June; Don and Emily in July; and Franklin in August.

Around two hurricanes will make landfall on US soil, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, so it would definitely be better for people to be prepared.

Additional strengthening is expected, and Franklin is forecast to become a hurricane later today and reach the coast of Mexico as a hurricane tonight or early Thursday.

In its updated outlook, NOAA said the season "has the potential to be extremely active".

Storms that enter the Gulf of Mexico can have major impacts on oil and natural gas operations. Take this hurricane season for example.
