The long wait for election results increased tensions in the nation of 45 million people, though the commission by law had until August 15 to announce them. It is not yet clear when that will happen.

Worldwide observers say they have not noted any signs of interference with the vote.

He also called for other candidates and observers to be given access to the servers.

"What the IEBC has posted as results of the Presidential Elections is a complete fraud based on a multiplier that fraudulently gave Uhuru Kenyatta votes that were not cast", he said in a series of tweets.

Police fired teargas - and in some cases live bullets into the air - to disperse several protests, which erupted in opposition strongholds in Nairobi as well as the western city of Kisumu after Odinga claimed a massive hacking attack had manipulated electronic tallying results.

IEBC chief Wafula Chebukati rejected this demand, saying the commission would only announce final results once all the forms from constituencies had arrived at the tallying centre in Nairobi and been validated - expected by midday Friday. He said it showed "a serious attempt to try to either doctor or alter the final results".

He said hackers had infiltrated the election authority's systems using the identity of Chris Msando, an election official who was tortured and murdered a week before the vote.

"The long wait is leading to tension", said political analyst Hezron Mogambi.

"We are supposed by now to have had results, but the delay has been caused by the fact that the opposition had complaints about the system of transmitting results", Mogambi said.

Many Kenyans fear a repeat of the violence that followed the 2007 disputed election, when about 1,200 people were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced as protests over the result led to ethnic killings.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga charges the election commission database was hacked and results were manipulated against him; the commission disputes his allegation.

A man seeking safety walks with his hands in the air through a thick cloud of tear gas toward riot police, as they clash with protesters throwing rocks in the Kawangware slum of Nairobi, Kenya, on Thursday.

In Kisumu, an Odinga stronghold in the west, youths banged drums and tyres burned in the streets in the Kondele district.

Celebrations broke out in pockets of Kenya on Thursday after the opposition said its candidate Raila Odinga should be declared victor of the presidential vote, a claim an election commission official said was "ridiculous".

The election commission said there was a hacking attempt but it failed, and that Odinga's camp had no right to declare him as the victor. "Preliminary reports show hacking was attempted but did not succeed". Kenyatta holds a strong lead with votes from 97.6 percent of polling stations counted. At least three people were killed in clashes between police and opposition supporters this week.

Heading the Carter Center's observer team, former US Secretary of State John Kerry said the integrity of the process is still intact.

Head of the EU's election mission Marietje Schaake confirmed Kerry's assessment of the voting, and said she had seen "no signs of centralized or localized manipulation".

"We affirm the conviction that the judicial process, the judicial system of Kenya, and the election laws themselves make full and adequate provision for accountability in this election". "The streets do not".

Worldwide election observers have said they saw no signs of interference with the vote.

The Kenya Human Rights Commission, a well-known non-governmental organisation, said it had discovered some discrepancies between provisional results on the election commission website and the paper forms.

The results would be validated and that a final decision would be announced "soon thereafter", he added.

The IEBC insists its electronic voting system - seen as key to avoiding fraud - had not been compromised, despite apparent attempts to do so.
