Palace sees nothing 'objectionable' with United States destroyer in South China Sea

Palace sees nothing 'objectionable' with United States destroyer in South China Sea

The operation on Thursday punctuated that stance.

Earlier Thursday, American warship USS John S. McCain sailed within a 12-mile range of Mischief Reef in the disputed Spratly chain in the South China Sea, US officials told the media.

Mischief Reef is one of the islands where China is building military facilities.

It was reportedly the third freedom of navigation operation challenging the territorial claims of China in the region since US President Donald Trump took office. "But China's own reclamation work did not end in mid-2015 with the completion of its artificial islands in the Spratlys", the think tank said on its website.

"China has indisputable sovereignty of the Nansha Islands and its adjacent waters and such a move severely undermines China's sovereignty and security, and severely endangers the safety of frontline personnel of both sides", he said.

"China is resolutely opposed to this kind of show of force and pushing of regional militarization by the U.S. that may easily cause an unexpected incident at sea or in the air", Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement.

China's Defense Ministry said two Chinese warships "jumped into action" and warned the United States ship to leave, labelling the move a "provocation" that seriously harms mutual trust, Reuters said. The reports, he said, have to be scrutinized for accuracy in order to preserve the interest of the claimant nations, such as between Vietnam and China.

"Freedom of navigation is guaranteed and anyone can do it so we just need to monitor", Padilla said in the same Palace press briefing.

On Thursday, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert was asked at a briefing whether "freedom of navigation" and other issues serve to "make for a more hard campaign on North Korea with China". "This clearly shows who does not want a stable South China Sea and who is the major force driving the militarisation in these waters", Geng said.

"As you all know, U.S. forces will operate in the Asia-Pacific region".

The statement accused Japan of actively meddling in the South China Sea affairs as a country out of the region. Nicole Schwegman said all Navy operations "are conducted in accordance with worldwide law and demonstrate that the United States will fly, sail, and operate wherever global law allows". It's true in the South China Sea. "It's true in other places around the world, as well", Nauert said.

Missile systems and other defense infrastructure are believed to have also been installed on the islands, which the United States and China's neighbors fear could be used to project Chinese power into the area and potentially obstruct freedom of navigation.

But China scoffed at the U.S., calling the move a "provocation" that could seriously damage the two countries' strategic trust and also create difficulties and obstacles for their defence forces, Reuters reported.

A leading U.S. think tank, meanwhile, released a new report documenting what it said was continuing reclamation work on Chinese-controlled islands in the area despite a recent claim by China's foreign minister that such work had stopped two years ago. China has territorial disputes with its neighbors over the area. Beijing continues to reclaim land farther north, in the Paracel Islands.

Its sweeping claims overlap with Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei - all ASEAN members - as well as Taiwan.
