Perseids Meteor Shower On Sunday

Perseids Meteor Shower On Sunday

There is a meteor shower likely coming to the sky near you this weekend, think of it as a sky watching warm up for the August 21 eclipse.

The meteor shower will also be viewable online at Slooh.com.

The full moon took place August 7, and the moon will still be about 80 percent full for the Perseid peak, Space.com reported.

"This year, we are expecting enhanced rates of about 150 per hour or so, but the increased number will be cancelled out by the bright Moon, the light of which will wash out the fainter Perseids", Cooke said.

The meteor shower happens as the Earth passes through debris left behind from the comet Swift-Tuttle every August.

The moon, which will be three-quarters full at the time of the peak, will rise around 11 p.m.

Cooke says, "A meteor every couple of minutes is good and certainly [makes it] worth going outside to look, but it is hardly the 'brightest shower in human history, '" Cooke said. According to the International Meteor Organization (IMO), a bright moon can obstruct the shower and this year, the moon will have waned to around 80% illumination by 12 August. You'll likely see three times as many meteors in rural areas.

Even though the rates will be about half of what they normally are sky conditions look to cooperate for viewing, especially Saturday night.

The best place to go to view the meteor shower will be away from cities or light pollution and go somewhere dark to better see the smaller meteors. Look up! The Annual Perseid Meteor Shower is peaking this weekend over the Heartland.

At Babcock State Park, naturalist Abby Rice will provide meteor-spotting guidance during a Perseid Party that starts at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Boley Lake.

For anyone planning to watch the Perseid meteor shower this weekend, the forecast holds some bad news. This years shower will produce 40-50 meteors per hour instead of the 80-100 meteors per hour that typically zip across the sky. The meteors are actually tiny dust and particles from the tail of the comet as it orbits around the sun. "These meteors are called Perseids because they seem to fly out of the constellation Perseus", Nasa said in a statement.
