Russia Denounces Tightening of US Sanctions and Long-Term Damage

A cease-fire brokered by the US and Russian Federation in southwest Syria has shown how the countries could work together. Tillerson broadly echoed that sentiment, saying the two countries had critical national security issues to discuss despite deep disagreements on some matters. That echoed what Tillerson told reporters Tuesday, "We can't let [sanctions] take us off track of trying to restore the relationship".

Tillerson said Monday that he discussed Moscow's threat to expel usa diplomats with Lavrov but has not yet determined an official response to the demands.

The bill, while continuing sanctions imposed by former President Obama in December that included seizing two Russian compounds in Maryland and Long Island, also limits Trump's ability to ease or reject the penalties without congressional approval. Trump and Tillerson opposed the legislation, but facing a likely veto override, Trump begrudgingly signed the bill.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has told Russia's top diplomat that Moscow's alleged interference in the 2016 U.S. election "created serious mistrust" between the USA and Russian Federation. President Donald Trump, accused by critics of being too cozy with Russian Federation, signed the bill last week despite what he described in a signing statement as the bill's Constitutional flaws.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met this weekend, both eager to try to make some progress on the ever-worsening bilateral relations.

Trump also lashed out at lawmakers for endorsing the sanctions measure while blaming Congress for fostering a tense relationship with Moscow.

There has been some confusion regarding the cuts as the United States is believed to have far fewer than 755 American employees working in the country.

Ryabkov said that if the US continues the diplomatic tit-for-tat by expelling more Russian diplomats, Russia would respond in kind, Russian state-controlled news agency RIA reported.

"Our relationship with Russian Federation is at an all-time & very unsafe low". The Russian Foreign Ministry also said it would seize two US diplomatic properties - cottages just outside Moscow's city center and a warehouse facility in the capital.

The memorandum on the establishment of four de-escalation zones in Syria was signed in Astana in May, with Russia, Iran and Turkey acting as the guarantors of the ceasefire regime.

While Tillerson noted that Russian election interference had "created serious mistrust between our two countries", Trump has continued to express doubt about the meddling, especially while stressing his distrust in the USA intelligence community.

Still, a US Justice Department investigation is moving ahead into Russia's election interference and potential Trump campaign collusion.
