The Dark Tower Director Discusses What's Next After Film's Ending (SPOILERS)

This first weekend of August certainly is different from previous years that put an exclamation point on the season with titles that set record-breaking openings like 2014's "Guardians of the Galaxy ($US94.3 million) or last summer's "Suicide Squad" ($US133.6 million)".

Annapurna's "Detroit", the latest film from Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow, met even more resistance, grossing a mere 7.25 million Dollars for the weekend. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an 18 percent rating, which makes it a decidedly "rotten" movie.

"The Dark Tower", produced by a 50/50 partnership between Sony and MRC for a reported 60 million United States dollars, stars Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, and managed to squeeze ahead of Warners" "Dunkirk', which took in another 17.6 million USD in its third weekend of release.

Despite almost universal critical disdain, The Dark Tower won the first weekend of the month, handily besting its new wide-release competition and ending Dunkirk's two-week reign at the top.

Dunkirk came in second at the box office this week amassing $17.6 million falling only 34% from its initial release. Reception for the movie is poor as fans of the book are unhappy with the changes. It has racked up $133.6 million in domestic sales so far, and worldwide sales have topped $300 million, according to studio sources quoted by comScore. The movie is yet to open in Italy, China and Japan so it can earn even more money soon. The computer-animated comedy netted US$12.4 million.

In fifth was Aviron's thriller Kidnap, at $10.2 million. The movie stars Halle Berry as a mother attempting to rescue her son after he is taken.
