Trains collide head-on in Egypt, dozens dead

Egypt's railway authority said an express train had crashed into the rear of the second train near the Khurshid station on the Cairo-to-Alexandria line.

At least 36 people were killed and another 123 injured on Friday when two trains collided in Egypt's coastal city of Alexandria, according to the Egyptian Health Ministry.

It was the deadliest train accident in the North African country since a November 2013 collision between a train and a bus killed 27 people south of Cairo.

In 2002, 373 people died when a fire ripped through a crowded train south of the capital.

The statement did not say what caused the incident, saying only that the authority's experts would be investigating.

Friday's collision was the latest in a series of deadly accidents that have claimed hundreds of lives over the years. Rescue teams, meanwhile, continued to look for more bodies and injured passengers inside the carriages.

Some people were still stuck inside the trains, a medical official told state TV.

The dead and injured were initially placed on blankets by the sides of the tracks amid farmland on the outskirts of Alexandria.

People gather at the site of a train collision in the area of Khorshid, in Egypt's Mediterranean city of Alexandria.

Abu Homs said he fears the death toll and the number of injured could rise further.
