Why Pakistan is mourning loss of German nun Ruth Pfau

She had been undergoing treatment at the Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre for the last two weeks and passed away during surgery at 12:30 am on Wednesday night, according to the Leprosy Centre.

Dr Pfau first visited Pakistan in 1960 and was so touched by the plight of leprosy victims that she chose to stay forever in the country to treat them.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa responded to the demise of Dr Ruth Pfau saying she will be remembered as the ambassador for humanity.

Pfau, who died Thursday at the age of 87, soon returned to Karachi after her brief stint in India. "Pakistani nation salutes Dr Pfau and her great tradition to serve humanity will be continued", the President stated.

Pfau first witnessed leprosy, an infectious disease that affects the skin and other organs of the body, in Karachi. With the partnership of the Pakistani government, Pfau developed the country's National Leprosy Control Programme and extended her efforts to include treatments for blindness and tuberculosis.

Not required to take the veil or live in seclusion, she ended up in Pakistan by chance. In 1996, the World Health Organization declared that leprosy had been controlled in Pakistan, which led Sr.

Tributes pour in after the passing of German nun and doctor who spent 56 years in the country battling leprosy.

In 2010, she was awarded Pakistan's high civil honor, the Nishan-i-Quaid-i-Azam, for public service.

She is to be buried on Sunday at a Christian cemetery in Karachi, Pakistan. She became known as the Mother Theresa of Pakistan, a reference to Mother Theresa of India, the nun and missionary who became a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. She was likewise granted with the Staufer Medal.

And as Pfau told the BBC, she never forgot that young man she met on her first stay in Karachi, the patient who crawled toward her in the dirt because he'd been convinced there was nothing more for him than that.
