10 militants dead, nine Egyptian policemen wounded in Cairo shootout

The police and military officials said the attack began with the detonation of roadside bombs that destroyed and set ablaze three armored vehicles and a fourth one carrying signal jamming equipment.

At least 18 policemen were killed in a militant ambush in Egypt's Sinai. The gunmen later opened fire with assault weapons and commandeered a police pick-up truck truck.

Terror attacks in Egypt used to focus on police and military men in North Sinai before spreading nationwide and targeting the Coptic minority as well, with majority claimed by a Sinai-based group loyal to the regional Islamic State (IS) militant group.

Unidentified security officials told Reuters that the attack took place near Arish, the capital of North Sinai province.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief media.

Monday's attack was the deadliest against security forces since July, when ISIS terrorists attacked a remote army outpost in the border town of Rafah, killing 23 soldiers.

According to the state news agency MENA, security forces entered a gun battle with militants in the vicinity of the blast site and managed to slay several of them.

Directly after this attack, security forces launched intensive operations to arrest any IS members in Cairo and those who show affiliation to the group. That was the deadliest attacks in two years.

Five policemen, including three officers, were also injured in the shootout, he said.

The violence surged after the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi in 2013, which was followed by a crackdown on the main Muslim Brotherhood group that has killed hundreds and led to the jailing of thousands more. Police said the militants had sneaked into Cairo from the volatile northern Sinai.
