BYU to sell caffeinated sodas

Mormon church-owned Brigham Young University ended a six-decade ban Thursday on the sale of caffeinated soft drinks on campus, surprising students by posting a picture of a can of Coca-Cola on Twitter and just two words: "It's happening".

Mormons avoid drinking coffee and tea.

In the statement, Wright said BYU will continue to honor their contract with Coca-Cola, they will not sell energy drinks and students will continue to have access to the caffeine-free beverages BYU already had.

"We have seem consumer preferences change over time", said University Communications spokeswoman Carrie Jenkins.

"Until more recently, Dining Services rarely received requests for caffeinated soda". The drinks themselves were never banned on campus officially, but you wouldn't find caffeinated drinks for sale anywhere at the University. The company delivers cold cans of caffeinated sodas to students and staff on campus within minutes of receiving an order via text.

It's not clear how the business will be impacted by the dining service change.

In 2012 the Mormon church clarified its policy on caffeine, paving the way for Thursday's decision. "The Church's health guidelines prohibit alcoholic drinks, smoking or chewing of tobacco, and "hot drinks" - taught by Church leaders to refer specifically to tea and coffee".

The move sparked social media celebrations from current and former students, with many recalling how they had hauled their own 2-liter bottles of caffeinated sodas in their backpacks to keep awake for long study sessions.

Amber Whiteley said she used to get nasty looks when she brought Mountain Dew to campus when she was a BYU student almost a decade ago.

Dean Wright, the school's director of dining services, said the decision to allow caffeinated soda on campus was a response to student demand. "We created faithful customers out of something that should have been a normal thing, selling caffeine on campus", Monahan said.
