Google sued for paying women less

Google sued for paying women less

These are the allegations in a lawsuit against Google filed Thursday in San Francisco on behalf of three female former employees.

The three plaintiffs held different positions while at Google: one was a software engineer, one was a communications specialist, and one was a manager who worked in various roles.

The women claim they were paid less than men, frequently assigned to lower paying jobs, and promoted less often than men in similar jobs. Coincidently, the U.S. Department of Labor is also in the midst of its own investigation into whether or not Google discriminates against women, Reuters noted.

"The Office of Federal Contract Compliance Program's analysis found six to seven standard deviations between pay for men and women in almost every job classification in 2015", the suit says.

The new class-action lawsuit and the Department of Labor complaint are both part of a bigger-picture issue with gender and diversity issues that has emerged for Google in particular and Silicon Valley in general. The legal action is now seeking class-action status to represent all women discriminated against by the company over the past four years. The lawsuit says that Google was aware of discrepancies in terms of pay and promotions for female employees, but has yet to fix the problem. "I'm glad that these women are coming forward and holding this tech giant accountable because it needs to happen in order to create change", said Gascoigne. It claims that Google "has channeled and segregated" women into career paths that just don't offer the same progression opportunities and pay.

"There is a false and gendered perception at Google that back-end engineering is more technically rigorous, and therefore more prestigious, than front-end software engineering", the complaint states. They said that such actions by Google violate California law, including the California Equal Pay Act. The agency performed a statistical regression analysis of the pay for roughly 21,000 employees at the company's Mountain View office for 2015, according to the complaint. Google has to date declined to provide the requested data, saying in a statement that the records being requested are "overbroad in scope, or reveal confidential data".

Google spokeswoman Gina Scigliano said the company will review the suit in detail, "but we disagree with the central allegations".
